Friday June 29th
Brancepeth Village Hall, 7.30 pm
I am always happy to help raise funds for worthy causes and this concert, in support of St. Cuthbert’s Hospice in Durham, is very close to my heart as my mother was supported in the last months of her life by a wonderful nurse/counsellor/friend from a similar hospice in her locality.
The great thing about organising a concert like this is the huge range of music we can choose from, and I think we have something for everyone. I am very much looking forward to singing with Bill Greenwood (baritone and fellow singer from Opera Nova). His beautiful mellow voice will suit the occasion perfectly.
I’m also very excited about singing Schubert’s ‘Shepherd on the Rock’ with Caroline Roberts on clarinet. This is a beautiful romantic piece expressing the whole range of emotions that the shepherd experiences while up in the mountains tending to his flock. Caroline, like Bill, will also be performing some of her own particular favourites during the concert.
Taking advantage of having such a terrific pianist as Stuart, I’m going to sing a beautiful Spanish aria called ‘La Maja y el Ruisenor’ which is a vocal arrangement of a piano piece by Granados. You only have to hear a few chords of the music to be transported to a hot summer evening in Southern Spain. Stuart has added some of his own touches to the arrangement and we may even here a bit of clarinet as well! I’m also including a couple of arrangements written especially by Stuart Buckton. ‘Homing’ is a wonderful Victorian melody that brings a tear to the eye while ‘Light as Thistledown’ is full of joie de vivre.
St Cuthbert’s Hospice St. Cuthbert’s provides a range of care and support services to individuals, their relatives and carers and helps people to cope with life limiting illnesses, and I really hope that as many people as possible will come along to support the evening. Tickets are only £10 and include a glass of wine and canapés. If you’d like to come along just give me a ring (07936 080535) or email me at [email protected]
