In February 2015, I was lucky enough to be invited to play the role of Violetta in Verdi’s La Traviata for Opera San Miguel.
This was the 4th time I and colleagues from Opera Nova have taken part in this Opera Workshop week, my previous performances being Rosalinda in ‘Die Fledermaus’, Belinda in ‘Dido and Aeneus’ and Lola in ‘Cavelleria Rusticana’.
Having learned the part at home in the UK, we flew out to Murcia at the end of January and started music rehearsals on Sunday 1 February. After an intense week of rehearsals we were ready to put on a fully staged performance on the Friday and Saturday evenings of the same week! It was certainly a challenging and, at times, a nerve wracking schedule but we managed to pull it off and I thoroughly enjoyed singing the beautiful arias and duets that Verdi composed for this tragic heroine.
